Record number of tourists in the mountains resorts last weekend
There were about 154,000 requests for the cable aerial lift points (at cable cars, gondola lifts, chair lifts and platter lifts) and more than 132,000 cars were reported in the major mountain resorts in Romania during the past weekend, reports the Ministry of Regional Development and Tourism (MDRT), according to data provided by local public authorities.
According to MDRT spokesperson Bogdan Oprea, the data reported last weekend represent record figures for this period in most resorts.
The top positions among the most crowded resorts (in terms of requests at aerial lift points) belong to Poiana Brasov, Predeal and Azuga, followed by Sinaia, Ranca, Straja, Borsec and Sugas-Bai mountain resorts.
The Ministry of Regional Development and Tourism have made investments amounting to 500 million euros over the past few years, in order to develop the tourism and sports infrastructure in the Romanian mountain resorts. Twelve new ski slopes have been built over the past couple of years and other 15 were expanded and improved, whereas nine cable aerial lift devices were built (gondola lifts and chair lifts) and 21 devices to make artificial snow.
Among the investments in the mountain resorts made by MDRT there are those necessary to hold the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival in February 2013 in Prahova Valley.
Among these investments there are the expansion of the skiing areas along Prahova Valley, by more than 40 km of new ski slopes, building an Olympic ramp for ski-jumping and annexes (transport facilities, tiers for spectators, parking lots, etc), opening two biathlon paths for both winter and summer, building three new aerial lift facilities, building a couple of new skating-rings, equipping with artificial snow facilities all the ski slopes in the area and building a reservoir for snowing in the vicinity.
