Over 20 thousand employees in the malls opened this year

The trade centers that have been or will be opened by year-end will hire at least 20,000 people, both in Bucharest and outside the capital city, given that five of the projects launched so far have alone created 7,700 new jobs. Business operators are the most important employers within these projects, followed by the administrative staff and the security and cleaning firms.
A big mall can create over 2,000 jobs, this being the number of employees with the biggest trade centers opened this year – Baneasa Shopping City (near Bucharest) and Shopping City Suceava (northeastern Romania), according to data presented by developers and financial consultants.
The data show that the eight commercial centers opened this year have already employed over 12,000 people, and at least another 10 commercial centers are to be opened by year-end.

A smaller mall, like City Park of Constanta (southeast) has about 1,500 employees, according to data presented by representatives of Neocity company, the project’s owner, while an even smaller project, Galleria, needs less than 1,000 employees.
Globe Trade Center (GTC) is to open three commercial centers under Galleria brand, in
September, October and November in Buzau (east), Piatra-Neamt (northeast) and Suceava.
The total number of people working in the commercial centers in Romania gets close to 50,000, given that only in the two Anchor Group malls in Bucharest there are 5,000 employees, while in Polus center Cluj there are another 2,000, according to the most recent available data.
Out of the malls’ lodgers, the hypermarket network Carrefour opened four new units in 2008, within some commercial centers, in which some 2,000 people work, at an average of 500 employees per unit.
Given the expansion plans of the commercial center developers, who announced at least the doubling of the present stock at over 2 million sqm of commercial centers, the number of employees of the commercial centers might exceed 100,000 people over the following years.
Wages within commercial centers can exceed 5,000 euro per month, at the level of the best paid mall managers, according to data available on the market, while the average net salary in trade stands at about 350 euros per month, according top data supplied by the National Statistics Institute (INS).
