PM Tariceanu: Industrial park could open in Craiova for investment of Ford suppliers

Gov’t intends to open an industrial park in Craiova, offering a location for the investment due to be started by suppliers of Ford, on Sept. 2, PM Calin Popescu-Tariceanu told a joint press conference with president Ford Europe John Fleming.
Representatives of 40 companies out of Romania, suppliers of parts and components for Ford, are paying a visit to Romania, to discuss with the management of the US company a future cooperation for the plant in Craiova.
The prime minister said there are also Romanian companies interested in contracts for supplying parts and components for Ford, such as Compa Sibiu, Chimica Orastie, and Auto Subassemblies Pitesti. “I kindly ask Ford officials to seriously examine if Romanian suppliers can also make contracts,” Tariceanu said.
He added that Ford will benefit in Romania from the same state aid like Renault, with the legislation in Romania compatible with that in the EU.
Tariceanu said he is happy that despite the problems in the US market and stagnation in the European market, Ford keeps is ambitions plans in Romania, confirming the performance of this company and the way in which is has been treated as an investor in Romania.
The head of Executive said that by the presence of Renault and Ford in Romania, the car building industry will become “the spine” of the Romanian industry, Romania will become in 2012, the biggest car maker in Central and Eastern Europe.
President Ford Europe John Fleming said in this context that Ford encourages its global suppliersin the car industry to open production centers in Romania. According to him, in  2012, the car maker in Craiova, taken over by Ford in March 2008, will make 300,000 cars and 300,000 engines annually.
In 2012, the plant in Craiova will make 2 models of cars Ford – Transit Connect, whose production will start in 2009, as well as a new model, which will be manufactured only in Craiova, and which will not be the new Fiesta.
In an investment worth 675 million euros, Ford committed itself to turn the plant in Craiova in a center of production of last generation. The works for the upgrading of the factory have already started. The projects include the installation of a new hall for the production of car bodies.
At the end of July this year, Ford Europe announced its plans to set up in Romania a National Sales Company, which will take over in August 2010 the full responsibility of the activities of marketing, sales and service for Ford cars. The setting up of a National Sales Company in Romania comes in consequence of a constant rise in the sale of Ford cars in the past years and of the purchase of the production facility in Craiova.
Ford expects expenses of around one billion euros annually in Romania, in support of its activities at the plant in Craiova. The number of jobs in the factory will almost double, from the current 3,900 to 7,000.
Ford Europe is in charge of the production, sale and servicing of the Ford cars in 51 markets, including Russia and Turkey. The first Ford cars were sent to Europe in 1903, the year when Ford Motor Co. was set up. Ford Europe currently employs some 73,000 people.
Ford officials and representatives of 40 supply companies were to pay on Sept. 3 a working visit to the plant in Craiova.
