The Day of Firefighters in Romania and the commemoration of 160 years since the heroic battle of Spirii Hill was celebrated on Saturday in Constitutiei Square through a parade of troops from county councils for emergency situations.
Present at the parade headed by gen. Viorel Nemes, first deputy of the inspector general for emergency situations were Minister of Interior and Administrative Reform, Cristian David, who was saluted by the Guard of Honour set up from the troops of the Inspectorate for Emergency Situations Spirii Hill of Bucharest, Health Minister Eugen Nicolaescu, State Secretary with the Ministry of Interior and Administrative Reform Victor Paul Dobre, State subsecretary with Health Ministry Raed Arafat, chief of Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (ISU) Bucharest, lt. Gen. Vladimir Secar[, general inspector ISU, brigadier general Zamfir Constantin, as well as reservists, veterans, military attaches in Bucharest.
'The Romanian firefighters have always honoured the mission to rescue and save lives, to protect patrimony and goods, to limit their destruction in fires, earthquakes, floods,'' said Romanian President Traian Basescu in a message addressed through maj.gen. Ion Oprisor, secretary of the Supreme Council for the coubntry's Defence.v (CSAT).
The head of the Romanian state stressed that September 13 marks also a pious homage paid to firefighters who sacrificed in 1848, but also in the War of Independence of 1877-1878 or in the two world wars. He praised the modernisation made over the past years after Romania's accession to NATO and the EU, within the Inspectorate General for Emergency Situations (IGSU), increasing in this way the level of security, protection and efficiency in the actions taken to save citizens.
PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu for his part said in the message delivered by State Secretary with MIRA Victor Paul Dobre that after the flooding of 2005 in western country, the Government made efforts to upgrade the service, considering for saving the lives of citizens the courage of firefighters is not enough, without efficiency and professionalism.
PM Tariceanu stressed that at present the Inspectorate General for Emergency Situations has 20,000 troops and experts unlike 2004 when the number stood at about 8,000. Tariceanu said that investments worth 500 million euros will be made in the upcoming years in the acquisition of special intervention vehicles and SMURD helicopters.
Representative detachments of professional emergency services, units specialized in interventions caused by earthquakes, floods, fires, explosions, technological damages, road accidents filed at the parade, presenting the state-of-the-art intervention equipment for fires, air or water accidents, including two helicopters.
On September 13, 1848, on this hill was fought the final battle of the 1848 Wallachian Revolution, between the Ottoman troops sent to quell the rebels and the Firefighters division of Bucharest. Out of 150 firefighters, 50 died in the battle. The battle of Spirii Hill became a symbol of the fight for freedom and national independence of the Romanian people,
