Government increases minimum salary

In its September 10 meeting the Government decided on increasing the minimum salary from 500 to 540 lei starting on October 1 and to 600 lei starting on January 1, 2009, according to the agreement concluded with the trade unions and the employers’ associations in July.
Spokesperson for the Government Camelia Spataru said that the increase in the guaranteed gross minimum salary over October 1-December 31 as against the one that is being paid now was 8% for a full programme of 170 hours a month.
The rise in salary on January 1, 2009 will be 11 precent from the 540 lei.
According to the Government resolution adopted on Wednesday, the Government will analyze in June 2009, together with the social partners, the value of the monthly gross average income for the first four months of next year.

“In case there are deviations of more than 5% of the monthly gross average salary from the predicted one, the Government will change, through a resolution, the gross minimum salary as of July 1, 2009, so that its share should be 33% of the gross average salary,” said Camelia Spataru.
According to the National Agency of Fiscal Administration, of the 6.4 million employees who have handed in fiscal records of the incomes they got from their basic position for 2007, 3.94 million are paid the minimum salary, namely 61,5% of the total number.
