Praktiker chain numbered, in late 2007, 20 stores and 2,071 employees, and Bricostore chain, 8 stores and 1,141 employees. The investment in extending the chain led to the difference in the net profit of the two companies.
In 2007, Praktiker added four stores to its chain, in Galati (south-east), Targoviste (south), Timisoara (west) and Iasi (north-east). Bricostore added one store only to its chain, last year.
Bricostore has its own plans of extension, for 2008, it intends to open stores in Braila (southeast), Arad (west), Focsani (east), Oradea (west), and Suceava (north-east), with ten million euros invested in each of them, on the average.
The other companies present in the market are bauMax, Mr.Bricolage, Hornbach, Tekzen, and local chains Dedeman, Arabesque and Ambient.
“We have to take into account that classical retailers, such as Praktiker or Bricostore, are marketing products for the DIY segment, while big chains, like Arabesque, Ambient, Dedeman are selling also classical building materials, such as cement and adhesives, “ said Claudiu Georgescu, vice-president of the Association of Makers of Building Materials in Romania.
