Praktiker and Bricostore, biggest players in DIY retail

Praktiker and Bricostore, the biggest players in DIY retail, registered 883.9 million lei (265.4 million euros) in business, 627 million lei (201.8 million euros) respectively, and 32.7 million lei (9.8 million euros) in net profit, 66.6 million lei (20 million euros) respectively, read data sent to the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF).
 
Financial results, calculated for 3.33 lei/euro, show Praktiker had a net profit margin of 3.7%, and Bricostore of around 10%.
Praktiker chain numbered, in late 2007, 20 stores and 2,071 employees, and Bricostore chain, 8 stores and 1,141 employees. The investment in extending the chain led to the difference in the net profit of the two companies.
In 2007, Praktiker added four stores to its chain, in Galati (south-east), Targoviste (south), Timisoara (west) and Iasi (north-east). Bricostore added one store only to its chain, last year.
 
For 2008, Praktiker Romania keeps as a development priority rapid extension the country over, with four or five stores opened. The company invests in each new store design between 8 and ten million euros, Praktiker officials said.
Bricostore has its own plans of extension, for 2008, it intends to open stores in Braila (southeast), Arad (west), Focsani (east), Oradea (west), and Suceava (north-east), with ten million euros invested in each of them, on the average.
The other companies present in the market are bauMax, Mr.Bricolage, Hornbach, Tekzen, and local chains Dedeman, Arabesque and Ambient.
 
The market of building materials reached last year 3-3.5 billion euros, with products distributed in specialized store chains accounting for 40-45% of that sum.
“We have to take into account that classical retailers, such as Praktiker or Bricostore, are marketing products for the DIY segment, while big chains, like Arabesque, Ambient, Dedeman are selling also classical building materials, such as cement and adhesives, “ said Claudiu Georgescu, vice-president of the Association of Makers of Building Materials in Romania.
 
The DIY market exceeded, last year, one billion euros. Estimates of employers’ associations say this market will grow, this year, at the same pace with the market of constructions, which will advance 30%.
