The arrivals and accommodation in tourist accommodation units went down 15.9 percent and 20.6 percent respectively, in Q1 2009, compared to the same period of last year, according to a release of the National Statistics Institute (INS).
The arrivals reported over January-March 2009 totalled 1.081 million, down by 15.9 percent as against the same period of the previous year. The arrivals of Romanian tourists in tourist accommodation units accounted in the first months of 2009 for 79 percent of the overall number of arrivals, whereas foreign tourists accounted for 21 percent of the overall number of arrivals, shares similar to last year.
Air transport in Q1, 2009 saw the biggest shrinkage by 18.3 percent, compared to the same period of the previous year.
The departures of Romanian tourists abroad, reported at border crossing points in the first three months of this year were of 2.60 million, down by 3.9 percent as against the same period of the previous year. The road transportation means were most used by Romanian tourists for departures abroad, accounting for 79.5 percent of the overall number of departures.
