Romanian Senate Speaker Mircea Geoana on Wednesday said the European Commission’s intent to condition the 5 billion-euro loan to Romania on the mechanism of cooperation and verification, the justice component more precisely, ‘ is completely unfair’.

‘We are now at a time when I cannot hide my deep concern related to the intent showed by the European Commission to condition the loan worth 5 billion euros, to be granted to Romania for supporting the balance of payments, on the mechanism of cooperation and verification. I believe this is a completely unfair thing to do, a gesture risking to prolong, beyond our natural and already assumed obligations, a situation of inferiority for Romania compared with other states of the EU,’ Mircea Geoana said at the debate on the current stage in achieving the commitments made by the Romanian Parliament under the European Commission’s Justice Report, ambassadors from other EU states participate in too.
