National Bank governor Mugur Isarescu said on Thursday that he is concerned over the cost assumed by commercial banks through the high interest rates for deposits.
‘Personally I am concerned about the cost assumed by commercial banks through deposit interest rates. Romania can not afford real interest rate levels above three percent,” the BNR governor said on Thursday on the occasion of the presentation of the central bank’s quarterly report on inflation.
Isarescu estimated that in this way, savings of non-residents can be attracted at the very best, but these would exit the country at the first signal of decline.
On the other hand, the BNR official believes that there are no worrying cases of commercial banks in terms of bad loans. Banks with a higher level of bad loans need to capitalize carefully, said Isarescu.
Isarescu admitted that there are cases of commercial banks in Romania that need to capitalize, but such a situation is completely normal.
„No semester has passed so far that banks did not perform capitalization operations. This should not be considered as a weakness,” said the BNR governor.
