If presidential elections were held next Sunday, Traian Basescu would rank in the lead of voters’ preferences, with 30.8 percent, followed by the leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD, in ruling coalition) Mircea Geoana, with 24.3 percent, according to an opinion poll conducted over May 3-5 by the Group for Social Studies (GSS) 2000, and released on Thursday.
According to the poll, next come the leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL, in opposition) Crin Antonescu – 20.3 percent, George Becali – 7.8 percent, Prince Radu – 6.3 percent and president of the Greater Romania Party (PRM) Corneliu Vadim Tudor – 5.5 percent.
GSS 2000 poll reveals that the undecided account for 26.9 percent.
At the question „Do you believe there is a politician in Romania capable to defeat Traian Basescu in the future presidential elections?” 50 percent of the respondents said „Yes”, 25.7 percent – „No” and 24.3 percent – „Don’t know”.
Amid those giving an affirmative answer 37.2 percent consider that Mircea Geoana could defeat Traian Basescu in the future presidential elections, 30.2 percent put their trust in Crin Antonescu, 6.8 percent in Prince Radu, 5.3 percent believe in either Corne liu Vadim Tudor or George Becali, 4 percent in Sorin Oprescu.
The Group for Social Studies 2000 conducted this poll for the Association of regional cooperation and development, on a sample of 1,092 people aged 18+, in 118 localities (of which 64 in urban zones, 54 in rural zones and Bucharest municipality).
The error margin is of 3 percent and results are likely to be guaranteed in a proportion of 95 percent.
