This year must be the end of Traian Basescu’s right-wing regime, said on Friday leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD, one of the power-sharing parties) Mircea Geoana at the official unveiling of the candidates of the PSD Bucharest Organization for European Parliament (EP) elections.
Geoana underscored that 2009 is the most important election year in the past two decades, because never in Romania’s post-1989 democratic life have election stakes been higher.
Inter alia, the leader of Social-Democrats argued that Romania is now in an important moment, facing the challenge of the international financial and economic crisis and when „critical voices from outside” are gaining in numbers.
„PSD stands indeed before the most important challenges and I am calling on voters for us to begin a real change in Romania and help us to victory on June 7…
We also have an obligation towards the country, and because the year 2009 is so important for us, it must represent the end of the Basescu regime,” said Geoana, adding that this will be the real change of this year.
The PSD leader emphasized that the MEPs who already represent Romania in EP have defended and will further defend national and European values, as well as the values of the Romanian Left, which considers that solutions exist for people, for keeping jobs, for wages and pensions.
