Asylum applications across the European Union (EU) stood around 20,000 a month, shows data presented by the Statistics Office of the European Communities (Eurostat).
Romanian authorities registered 1,180 asylum applications in 2008, specifically 55 applications per one million inhabitants.
Of the total applications filed in Romania, 675 received a resolution from the authorities and 110 thereof were approved.
As many as 85 applicants were granted the status of refugee and ten were offered supplementary protection; 15 applications invoked humanitarian reasons. Of the applications registered in Romania, 565 were turned down.
Across Europe, there were 240,000 asylum applications registered in 2008, corresponding to 480 applications per one million inhabitants.
