According to the aforementioned source, the high utilisation rate of the Internet in Romania was of 54 percent, the local market advancing, therefore, to the eight place in the European Union, ahead of traditional countries such as Sweden for instance.
As regards the demographic figures of Internet users aged over 18 years, in the urban environment 47 percent are women and 53 percent are men. Most people using the Internet are young people aged between 18 and 34 years old, with an utilisation rate ranging between 32 and 38 percent. Of the total of Internet users, 52 percent have high school and 42 percent have higher education. Only 4 percent of the users are using the Internet as source of information below 30 minutes a week.
Referring to the categories of products purchased online, the IT&C categories are leading with 60 percent, followed by computer games, toys, jewels, presents or tickets to various concerts (20- 30 percent). The remainder up to the maximal percentage is shared between niche products, such as fitness, diet, baby products, books and information.
According to the figures of GoShopping.com, most Romanians bought online from Romania, only 4-5 percent resorting to services outside the country. The American company stressed that at present there are about 900 online shops or sites of e-commerce in Romania and they are estimated to reach 3,000 shops in 2011, according to the National Communications Authority (ANC).
GoShopping .com was released in Romania in Q1, 2009 and holds at present over 160 shops and 170,000 products.
