Minister of Foreign Affairs Cristian Diaconescu stated on Sunday, at the end of his visit to Washington, that President Traian Base scu could go to the USA in the autumn, to meet his American counterpart Barack Obama.
„Normally, contacts at the highest level are usual in the field of foreign policy.
This is a natural approach (as for the preparation of the visit of President Traian Basescu to the USA – editor’s note). We hope that the President’s visit to Washington will take place in the autumn. And not only – we wish that other dignitaries will have the equal opportunity to carry out a direct dialogue there”, pointed out Cristian Diaaconescu on a TV channel.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Cristian Diaconescu said, prior to his visit to the United States of America, that a visit of President Traian Basescu to Washington must take place as soon as possible.
Asked if he was going to prepare a meeting of the head of state with Obama Administration, Minister Diaconescu replied: „Categorically, yes. Highest level contacts are very useful and, categorically, such a visit must be organized as fast as possible”.
The sitting head of state’s latest visit to the USA took place over July 26-28 2006, when he met former President George W.Bush, former Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, House representatives.
The visit’s central objective was consolidation of an intensified political dialogue and of the strategic partnership between Romania and the United States of America.
