The standing committee of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania approved, at the end of March, the order of the candidates for Euro-elections, with the list opened by bishop Laszlo Tokes, from the CNMT, followed by Gyula Winkler and Sogor Csaba, both of them from UDMR, who currently are members of the European Parliament (EP) from this party.
After Laszlo Tokes, Gyula Winkler and Sogor Csaba, there comes another member of CNMT – Zsolt Szilagyi and a candidate from the youth organization of UDMR Peter Kovacs.
UDMR and CNMT signed, on Feb 22, an understanding stipulating the participation of the two parties on a common list at the Euro-parliamentary election. The document was signed by the president of the two parties, Marko Bela and Laszlo Tokes.
According to this understanding the two parties make up a common list, called „the list of Hungarian solidarity”, for the Euro-parliamentary election, the places are distributed between UDMR and CNMT, 75%-25% respectively. On the common list there are 32 representatives from UDMR and 17 from CNMT.
Bishop Laszlo Tokes was born on April 1 1952, in Cluj, center-west. He is a graduate from the Protestant Theological Institute of Cluj. The bishop is linked to the moment of the start of the revolution of December 1989. In the period 1990, he was president of honour of UDMR, from 2003, head of the CNMT. and from 2007 he is a member of the EP, as an independent. He is married and has 3 children.
Gyula Winkler was born on March 14 1964, from 2007 he was a member of the EP, as an independent.
He is married and has two children.
Gyula Winkler was born on March 14, 1964, in Hunedoara, western Romania. He is an engineer in electronics and electrical engineering and insurance. From Dec 2007, he is a member of the European Parliament, after he was minister and state secretary in the Tariceanu Government. He is married and has a child.
Sogor Csaba was born on on May 2, 1964. He is a graduate of the Protestant Theological Institute in Sibiu, center, and of several training courses from Romania and Britain. From December 2009, he is the second MP from UDMR. He is married and has four children.
The fourth candidate on „the list of Hungarian Solidarity” is Zsolt Szilaghi, from UDMR, he was born on July 29 1968, in Oradea, western Romania. He graduated from the Faculty of Political Analysis of Eotvos Lorand university of Budapest.
Between 1990 and 2004 he was a deputy in the Parliament of Romania, and between 2007 and 2009, head of cabinet in the European Parliament. He is the deputy president of CNMT.
The purposes of the candidates were told by bishop Tokes at the official launch which took place at the beginning of last week. According to him, the future MEP from the list of Hungarian Solidarity” will represent the interest of the entire Hungarian nation, for having a strong representation but also for the creating of the wish of territorial autonomy.
We do not believe that we are the representatives of the Hungarian Community of Transylvania, but also the representatives of all the Hungarians in the Carpathian Basin and in total, the 14-15 million Hungarians, that is the single interest of the Hungarian nation, which has to be strong, ” said Laszlo Tokes.
UDMR head Marko Bela said that this solidarity of the Hungarian political forces has been made „at the order” of the members of the community, who imperatively asked this in the interest of keeping and affirming its identity.
