Leonard Orban: It is important that people go to polls for europarliamentary elections
„It is important that people go to the polls. The European Parliament is a very important institution and it will be even more important if the Lisbon Treaty comes into force.
There will be about 40 additional fields on which the European Parliament will decide by means of the various normative community documents.
The decisions to be made at community level influence all our lives.
During this span of time I insist on people going to the polls but, of course, I am not joining the election campaign. Commissioners do not join the election campaign,” said Orban.
On the other hand he said that there were very big chances for Romania to go on having a European commissioner no matter if the Nice Treaty stays in force or if the Lisbon Treaty comes into effect.
„Practically there are very big chances for us to go on having a European commoner. If the Lisbon Treaty comes into force, every member state will practically have a commissioner,” said Leonard Orban, who added that, if the number of European commissioners was going to decrease, Romania would not miss the chance of having a commissioner.
„If the Nice Treaty stays in force and the Lisbon one does not come into effect, a change will have to be made, a reduction of the number of commissioners, but this will unanimously be made by the European Council.
If Romania does not want to miss the chance of having a commissioner, it is simply enough for it to oppose in this body. I do not think there will be a drop in the number of commissioners. If this drop were real, it will not affect Romania,” said current European Commissioner Leonard Orban.
