Basescu: Who could imagine a Romanian President would sign a treaty endorsing Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact?
President Traian Basescu stated on Friday, in Piatra Neamt (east), that Chisinau authorities makes the signing of the Convention on Small-Scale Border
Traffic conditional on the signing of the Moldovan-Romanian State Border Treaty, but no Romanian state’s head would sign a document which endorses the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact (from 1939, editor’s note).
„Unfortunately, the inexplicable and unacceptable measure on the introduction of a visa regime for Romanian citizens by the Republic of Moldova is a brake on the way of positive evolutions of our bilateral cooperation…, as well as at the level of inter-human relations.
In a larger context we cannot understand the reticence and conditions imposed by Chisinau Government in the matter of the Convention on Small-Scale Border Traffic with Romania”, said President Basescu, who is attending the Local Authorities’ Forum from Romania and the Republic of Moldova.
He also said that the Republic of Moldova makes the signing of the aforementioned convention conditional on the signing of the State Border Treaty.
„More than 80 representatives of the local communities in the Republic of Moldova are present here.
Can anyone imagine that a head of the Romanian state might sign a treaty which endorses the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact? Only a mind not capable of grasping what the Romanian state’s head responsibility means”, underlined Basescu in the applause of the audience.
The President also stressed that Romania „has in its history” the recognition of the former Soviet Union borders and that the Republic of Moldova is „inheriting part of that border”.
„Under these conditions, we view the signing of a State Border Treaty, which would make the head of the Romanian state a partner of Ribbentrop and of Molotov, as redundant.
This approach also runs counter to the obligations assumed by the neighboring state in relation to the European Union (EU), in the framework of the dialogue on easing the travel regime in the EU space for the Republic of Moldova’s citizens”, he also said.
Almost 150 town mayors from Romania and the Republic of Moldova take part, in Piatra Neamt, in the first session of the Local Authorities Forum.
Debates are focused on the administrative decentralization in the public health care, public order, culture and social assistance fields.
