Ursus Breweries, producer of Ursus and Timisoreana beer brands reached a market share of 29 percent in the tax year 2008-200 9, as against 24.4 percent on year ago, according to representatives of the local branch of SABMiller which quotes the studies of MEMRB company.
‘In the fiscal year we gained 4-6% of the local beer market and we hold at present a market share of 29 percent. We increased the number of sold brands in PET packages and we focused more on retail distribution,’ said the president of Ursus Breweries, Stephan Maria Weber quoted by Ziarul Financiar as saying.
The volumes sold by Ursus Breweries grew in the latest fiscal year by 18 percent to almost 5.9 million hectoliters, whereas in value the advance was of 27 percent in lei.
According to representatives of Ursus Breweries, the biggest rise was reported over April 2008-March 2009 by Peroni, up 60 percent, followed by Ursus with 36 percent and Timisoreana with 27 percent.
‘During our fiscal year the beer market grew with only 3 percent, considering the last two quarters went down almost 4-5%. Over April 2009-March 2010 we might expect the market to stagnate or even report diminution. We have to see how the economy will recover and how beer sales will develop this summer,’ said Weber.
Ursus Breweries plans to halt this year the production at the Azuga-based brewery (south Romania).
According to Weber, the about 180 employees of Azuga Brewery will be placed on temporary layoff and will receive between 10 and 20 compensatory wages depending on the years of service and re-qualification, as well as support for professional retraining.
Azuga beer brand will be produced in the four plants of Ursus Breweries in Buzau (south), Cluj (center-west), Brasov (center) and Timisoara (west).
