Bull breeders to get outstanding subsidies

Romanian Agriculture Minister Ilie Sarbu on Friday assured the bull breeders from all over the country they would get the outstanding subsidies from 2007 and 2008.
Sarbu, who attended the opening of the 3rd edition of the exhibition called The Bull Breeder’s Days 2009 in Rasnov (central Romania), also assured the bull breeders of his full support and cooperation and urged them to engage in a constant dialogue with the ministry.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forests and Rural Development, there are currently in Romania 2.7 million bulls both in specialised farms and at the individuals, while the head of the breeders’ trade union says there are as many as 1.8 million bulls.
With respect to the drought currently facing Romania, the agriculture minister said that some 50 percent of the crops have been hit, which means one million hectares.
‘This doesn’t mean that the wheat will be lost, but that there will be smaller crops’, Sarbu stressed.
He said he didn’t believe the prices for foodstuffs would rise, even though the European Union states are currently stocking up on pork, butter and powder milk. There aren’t going to be any problems with the bread either, he added.
‘If we get three million tonnes of wheat – and I think we’ll get it under any circumstances – the domestic demand is met. We’ll not be able to export any, though, as we did in the last years’, he said.
