President Traian Basescu stated on Wednesday evening, on the occasion of a meeting with the members of Romanians’ community in Greece, at Romania’s Embassy headquarters in Athens that, in the past three weeks, the pace of citizenship granting rose significantly and the process is to accelerate in the upcoming period.
„After the Government Emergency Ordinance was issued, on simplifying the procedures for Romanian citizens and their relatives till the third degree, who were forcibly deprived of their citizenship in the past, the Ministry of Justice already took the needed measures in order to boost the capacity of rendering them back their citizenship.
I can tell you that I receive weekly a report on this topic from the Ministry of Justice – the number of citizenships granted in three weeks surpassed by far the number in the months before, and in the immediately coming period the processing capacity of applications will be increasingly boosted”, said Basescu replying to a question addressed by one of the participants.
As well, Basescu asked those interested in not to take the „long road” to the Ministry of Justice, to submit their application, prior to checking up the institution’s web site for information on the needed documents.
He also said the interview was scrapped for those who forcibly lost citizenship, so that they must submit only the respective documents.
„I assure you that this mechanism is revised all the time in order to function better”, he said.
