Eurostat: Romania’s trade deficit drops significantly in five months

Romania’s trade deficit over Jan.-May 2009 narrowed to 3.7 billion euros, from a negative balance of 9.1 billion euros in the same period last year, show figures made public by the European Office of Statistics (Eurostat) on Monday.

While the Romanian exports dwindled 21 percent down to 11 billion euros in the first five months of this year from 13.9 billion euros over Jan.-May 2008, the imports were down 36 percent to 14.7 billion euros from 23 billion euros by end-May 2008.

Across the European Union, the highest surplus was recorded by Germany (46.3 billion euros) over this Jan.-May, while Romania ranks sixth with 3.7 billion euros in deficit over the same period.
