Cristian Diaconescu: Law must present viewpoint on Mircea Basescu case

Foreign Minister Cristian Diaconescu said at Lepsa, Vrancea County (eastern Romania) on Wednesday, that the ministry he heads had nothing to do with the alleged import of weapons and explosives carried out through the Company owned by Mircea Basescu – the Romanian President’s brother.

Attending the Summer School of the Social Democratic Youth in Vrancea, the foreign minister stressed that the state institutions must express their standpoint on the case.

‘The law must express its viewpoint. In my opinion, it is necessary to prove that now we have a state of law that works clearly and determinedly and that dissociates such a problem from the area of campaign, from the electoral area,’ said Diaconescu.

He added that we ‘must be cautious’ when talking about the state tenets and attitudes, including such sensitive actions.

„The foreign ministry has no competence, but only the Exports Control Agency, which at the institutional level is related to the foreign ministry, but the ministry has only an advisory participation,” ForMin Diaconescu said.
