Portfolio of agriculture in the European Commission (EC) remains the option which Romania has at present, said on Monday vice-premier Dan Nica, after the meeting of the ruling coalition’s leaders, stressing however that no names have been mentioned at the meeting.

‘The decision was to mandate foreign minister to act in line the customs for the identification of the best ways through which we might get an important portfolio of European commissioner, and the portfolio of Agriculture is the one maintained as an option for Romania at present.

We haven’t discussed about any names,’ said Dan Nica.
He said that Romania has to obtain a major portfolio with responsibilities and particularly a way of expression for the dimension of a country such as Romania.

Leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Mircea Geoana on Monday announced that the minister of foreign affairs Cristian Diaconescu would inform the coalition about the stage of talks on the obtaining of a portfolio of European commissioner.

First vice-president of the Democratic Liberal Party (PD-L) Theodor Stolojan said for his part that Romania is interested in portfolios such as Agriculture, Transport or Regional Development and stressed that it is important Romania should not limit to the nomination of a single portfolio.

President Traian Basescu has recently said that Romania’s goal is the obtaining of a position of commissioner for Agriculture.
‘At present we have a major diplomatic effort – I hope to be equally accompanied by the effort of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but mine is a major diplomatic effort – Romania’s obtaining of the portfolio for agriculture.

I can assure you I’ve been open-minded with the ambassadors of EU countries at the meeting I had in June.

We told them our intention and have already spoken to a range of heads of state and government with whom we agreed upon supporting Romania to obtain this portfolio,’ the head of the state told the public TV station TVR.
