Famous retired gymnastics coach Octavian Bellu has been appointed director of Romania’s Olympic Excellence Academy, the Romanian Sports Olympic Committee (COSR) reports in a press release.
Bellu and COSR Chairman Octavian Morariu have one month to come up with a programme for the Romanian Olympic Academy and to restructure the Technical Olympic Committee in view of the Olympic training programme for the 2012 and the 2016 Olympic Games.
Bellu has been designated the world’s most successful coach by the World Records Academy for a tally of 279 medals won by his athletes in Olympic games, world championships and European championships.
As many as 16 of them are gold medals won by the teams coached by Bellu and his assistant Mariana Bitang at various editions of the Olympic Games. With Bellu at the helm of the Romanian women’s gymnastics team, Romania won two Olympic titles and 5 world titles.
Bellu resigned a public office of state secretary with the Ministry of Sports and Youth on July 10.
