President Basescu: Agency for citizenship granting should be set up

An agency for citizenship granting should be established, given that the current structures, subordinated to the Justice Ministry, cannot cope with the large number of visa applications, President Traian Basescu said Wednesday at the Cotroceni palace at a meeting with representatives of the Romanian diplomats.

„I don’t want to come up with a proposal that is again the government’s policy of shutting down agencies, but I believe we should establish an agency designed to deal with citizenship granting as soon as possible.

It’s already obvious that the current structures, subordinated to the Justice Ministry, cannot cope with the large number of visa applications submitted by those who have lost it against their will,” Basescu explained.

As regards Moldova, the head of state said that Romanian diplomats should know that the major effort is to convince Romania’s partners and allies that Moldova should be considered as part of the Western Balkans when it comes to future expansion.

„We have been insisting on that for more than 4 years, it’s obvious that the European partners have begun to understand the motivations and interests of the EU but also of Molova as far as EU accession is concerned.

A big mistake would be approaching the Western Balkans issue without including Moldova, forcing us to later take a set of measures to correct what could have been done well from the very beginning,” Basescu explained.

„Our goal as regards the Republic of Moldova is to see it part of the EU sooner or later,” the head of state explained.
