Head of the Damen Shipyard of Galati (eastern Romania), Kees de Ruiter, on Thursday announced the number of redundancies will reach 700 by year-end.
„Some 574 people have been laid off so far and there will be 700 redundancies by year-end… We have put large amounts in investment and training and it’s a loss for us too to leave them unemployed.
I really hope we will survive this tough time. We hope things will greatly improve in 2011 for us, and we will do our best to survive 2010. We have been facing difficulties since 2008, when the crisis started,” Kees de Ruiter said.
He also said that there are orders until 2011, with no less than 11 ships to be delivered by end-2009.
Ruiter also said that the shipyard currently has 2,240 employees and that the best figure for full productivity is 2,000.
Those 700 people made redundant will benefit by compensatory payments.
