BNR: Population’s bank deposits see drop

The population’s bank deposits in lei dropped by 0.6 percent, down to 59.759 billion lei, on August 31, 2009, while compared with the end of the year, with a growth worth 19.8 percent (14.1 percent in real terms) having been recorded compared with August 31, 2008, the Romanian National Bank (BNR) on Wednesday announced.

The deposits in lei of the legal persons (non-financial companies and non-monetary financial institutions) recorded an increase by 4.2 percent, up to 43.090 billion lei, on August 31, 2009 data, compared with the end of the year, while the figure dropped by 1.2 percent (-5.9 percent in real terms) compared with August 31, 2008.

The deposits in foreign currency of the resident population by household and of the legal persons (non-financial companies and non-monetary financial institutions) increased by 2.4 percent, expressed in lei, up to 58.542 billion lei on August 31, 2009, while expressed in euros, the deposits in foreign currency increased by 2.1 percent, up to 13.862 billion euros.
