Dan Nica – third interior minister under current government

Prime Minister Emil Boc has informed and consulted on Monday the ruling coalition on his plan to reshuffle Minister of Administration and Interior Dan Nica.

Dan Nica is the third Social Democrat holding the office of Minister of Administration and Interior since the current Executive took over its mandate, after Gabriel Oprea and Liviu Dragnea.

The Ministry of Administration and Interior (MAI) in the newly formed government as the result of the parliamentary elections on November 30, 2008, won by the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Democrat Liberal Party (PD-L), was distributed after the negotiations between the two political formations to PSD.

Gabriel Oprea was named as Minister of Administration and Interior and on December 23, 2008 he took over the mandate.
On January 9, 2009 Gabriel Oprea named Police Quaestor General Virgil Ardelean as Chief of the General Department of Information and Internal Protection (DGIPI), who also held this office in the period 1998 through 2007.

Following this decision, taken without consulting PSD, Gabriel Oprea saw his political support withdrawn and, later on, he was excluded from the party, as well.

On January 13, Minister Gabriel Oprea submitted his resignation from MAI office, arguing that „he does not wish to create tensions likely to affect the ruling alliance”.

Premier Emil Boc accepted Oprea’s resignation and forwarded to President Traian Basescu the proposal referring to the naming of vice prime-minister Dan Nica as interim Minister of Administration and Interior. The same day President Traian Basescu signed the decrees of removing Gabriel Oprea from MAI office and naming of Dan Nica as interim minister.

On February 19, PSD National Executive Committee designated Liviu Dragnea for the office of Minister of Administration and Interior, a day later President Traian Basescu signing the respective appointment decree.

On February 2, after 12 days of mandate, Minister Liviu Dragnea announced his resignation from office. He explained that he made that move because the allocated budget to the ministry was insufficient for the implementation of his planned strategy and that he could not attain the assumed targets.

Following Liviu Dragnea’s resignation Vice-premier Dan Nica was confirmed on February 11 by the reunited plenary of the two Parliament chambers as Minister of Administration and Interior.

Same day President Traian Basescu signed the decree of removing Dan Nica from the office of interim Minister of Administration and Interior and the Vice prime-minister office, as well as his appointment as Vice prime minister and Minister of Administration and Interior.
