Spokesman for Bulgarian Foreign Ministry: It is normal for Bulgaria to support Romania for position of commissioner for agriculture
Goranov added that, in the past few years, the bilateral relations are at a very good level and continue to develop. Asked whether Bulgaria expects support from Romania in its efforts to get an important portfolio with the European Commission, the spokesperson said that the issue is very delicate, as the portfolios are established by the member countries by unanimity of vote.
Because of that, each country is seeking support first from its closest friends. So that, at bilateral level, the issue has been discussed for a long time. But Bulgaria announced neither its candidacy for the position of European commissioner, nor the portfolio it wants, said Goranov.
Bulgarian minister of agriculture and food Miroslav Naidenov announced on Sunday that Bulgaria will probably support the candidacy of Romania for the portfolio of agriculture in the future European Commission. Naidenov talked about the issue with PM Boiko Borisov and there is no problem for supporting Romania.
„We are also interested that our neighbour from the North gets the portfolio of agriculture, because we have similar problems in this sector,” said Naidenov. In his opinion, this portfolio will be extremely important for the successful absorption of EU funds for agriculture in the two countries until 2013.
