She was referring video footage that appears to show the president striking a 10-year-old boy in the face during a campaign rally in 2004, in the southern Ploiesti city.
‘I stay witness that my husband has never been aggressive to our daughters or any other child. But beyond standing by Traian Basescu’s side, I as a mother deem unacceptable to introduce the child in the video in the dirt of the elections and to destroy his life. For this thing, Mr. (Mircea) Geoana, no mother will be able to forgive you, no matter how much you apologize’, Maria Basescu says in her open letter.
The president’s wife points out that her response is meant to break silence, since ‘what the press and the people behind it are doing today’ seems unacceptable to her.
‘I am breaking the silence today since what the press and the people behind it are doing today seems unacceptable to me. I do not want to say that what Traian Basescu has done during his tenure is perfect.
I know, however, that all the time he has been thinking how to do good things for the common people who elected him. Nevertheless, when it comes to the relations he has with other people, I can say, after 34 years of marriage, that nobody knows Traian Basescu better than myself’, she stresses. Maria Basescu speaks in her letter of poet Mircea Dinescu’s assertions that her husband allegedly hit her and she tells him to apologize to her daughters.
‘I heard Mr. Mircea Dinescu say a few days ago that my husband allegedly had hit me and I still cannot believe he said that. I don’t know in what family Mr. Dinescu grew up, but in my family, in my home and in my life such things have never happened. You owe it, Mr. Dinescu, to apologize to my children for the lies you said’, she said.
The president’s wife also slams Social Democratic leader Mircea Geoana for having introduced the child in the 2004 video into the ‘dirt of the elections’. ‘But beyond standing by Traian Basescu’s side, I as a mother deem unacceptable to introduce the child in the video in the dirt of the elections and to destroy his life. For this thing, Mr. Geoana, no mother will be able to forgive you, no matter how much you apologize’, she stresses.
She ends her letter by saying it is not easy to be a president’s wife ‘when he puts the country’s interests above anything else, even above the family sometimes.’
‘But I love and respect my husband Traian Basescu for this too’, she says in the end.
