PSD vows to meet pledge to earmark 6pc of GDP for education
A presidential candidate of the PSD + Conservative Party (PSD+PC) Alliance, Geoana on Wednesday welcomed officials of teachers’ trade unions at a meeting where also attending were PSD Deputy Chairman Ecaterina Andronescu, a former education minister, and former state secretary with the Ministry of Education and Research (MEC) Ionut Costoiu.
Geoana asked the union leaders not to use the conversation to later on declare their endorsement of Geoana’s candidature for President, arguing that the main point of the conversation is shaping up objectives for the education sector, which he said is vital to the Romanian society. The PSD leader also promised that the education sector will become subject to a three-year multi-annual budgeting under the future law on fiscal accountability. He also assured the trade unions that the negative Budget rectifications will not be aimed at education, and such rectifications will be limited under the same law.
Geoana also announced that officials of the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the European Commission will come to Bucharest in mid-December, when he will plead for a ‘refining’ of the uniform pay law for the public sector, so that teachers may enjoy the respect they deserve. Geoana also said he will resume public debates after the December 6 runoff on the national education law, which he claimed has been ‘brutally politicised over the past years.’
