The organisation and conduct of the census, as well as the processing and release of its data will stretch 2010-2013, said Muntean. Under a normative act approved on Wednesday by the Government, a series of preliminary census activities are scheduled to be carried out, including marking off the size of the territorial administrative units in census units; establishing the local census bodies and technical secretariats; drawing up a census methodology as well as classifications and nomenclatures and printing and distributing the census materials.
The total cost of the census is put at RON 192 million, spread over four years. The document approved on Wednesday does not distribute the funds yet, but is establishes the size of the budget. This will be the first census to be conducted by Romania since becoming a full member of the European Union and it will be based on the European Parliament’s requirements concerning population and housing censuses.
All the EU member states should provide accurate data about the population and housing units in he EU, with 2011 becoming the first reference year. The last census to date in Romania was conducted in 2002, when the country’s population was revealed to be 21,680,974.
