Vote-counting abroad: Basescu – 78.39 pct, Geoana – 21.01 pct

Romanian incumbent president Traian Basescu, independent candidate for president with the endorsement of the Democratic Liberal Party (PD-L) obtained 78.39 percent of the votes cast by Romanians abroad in the runoff, with the candidate of the PSD+PC Alliance obtaining only 21.01 percent, electoral judge Mircea Moldova from the electoral office for the Romanians with the residence abroad told on Monday.

According to the report of this electoral office there were 115,831 electors voting with Traian Basescu abroad and 31,045 voting with Mircea Geoana, out of the total 147,754 voters. According to the statistics by countries, the results of the presidential runoff published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on its Web page showed that Traian Basescu won in most of the European states.

The most significant victory obtained by Traian Basescu against his countercandidate Mircea Geoana was recorded in the Republic of Moldova, where he collected 94.82 percent of the total votes. Traian Base scu also scored high on such continents like Australia – 86.71 percent and Canada – 81.64.
Mircea Geoana obtained a higher percentage compared with his rival in 16 countries, among which Uzbekistan – 87.50 percent, Iraq – 85.71 percent, Belarus – 85.71 percent, Montenegro – 75 percent. In Cuba and Indonesia, the score was 50-50.
