Basescu is expected to arrive at the European Council headquarters on Thursday afternoon. After a first work session, Basescu will attend a work lunch of the attending heads of state or government.
On Friday, President-elect Basescu will attend the second work session of the European Council summit, at the end of which he will hold a news conference.
The EU summit meeting is devoted to the analysis of the programme and the priorities of the EU Troika – Spain, Belgium and Hungary – for January 1, 2010 – June 30, 2011.
The agenda of the Brussels summit includes institutional aspects generated by the coming into force of the Lisbon Treaty, as well as the economic and financial state of the European Union and employment in the EU. Also tackled will be climate change, simultaneously with the UN climate change conference in Copenhagen.
The summit will also discuss the Stockholm Programme, as part of justice and home affairs talks, and the EU Neighbourhood Policy as well as the latest developments in Iran and Afghanistan.
