PSD is equally ready for governing and for making opposition

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) is equally ready to govern or to act as opposition, the PSD leader Mircea Geoana on Thursday states, also adding that PSD will never support a government to be headed by a Prime Minister from the PD-L (Democratic Liberal Party).

‘We are equally ready to govern and to act as opposition’, Geoana told Radio Romania Actualitati. He also said the government needs to be created by the parliamentary majority, with PSD representing this majority, together with the PNL (National Liberal Party) and even without the support from the UDMR. ‘Unless the Constitutional Court (CCR) rules in our favour the results of the presidential election, and while we still making a majority in the Parliament, we will ask the CCR to decide who has the right to make the government – the parliamentary majority or the Romanian President as he pleases?’, Geoana said.

He reiterated the tight connection existing between him and the PNL leader Crin Antonescu, also referring to a good cooperation between the PNL and the PSD in the territory. ‘I don’t believe Traian Basescu is going to give the Liberals the position of Prime Minister, after (what happened with) Calin Popescu-Tariceanu, but I am positive Mr. Antonescu could be an excellent Prime Minister’, Mircea Geoana said, reaffirming PSD would not accept to govern with PD- L.

According to the PSD leader, Romanians are still waiting for an anti-crisis plan, with the presidential campaign having already prolonged too much the adoption of the budget for 2010. ‘The next months are going to be very difficult for our country.
We could have had a budget before the elections, in order to send a positive signal to the International Monetary Fund, but PD -L refused to adopt the budget for 2010’ the PSD leader said. He also underlined Romania needs a democratic equilibrium, in order not to end into an Eastern democracy, giving Belarus as example.
