Romania’s exports down by 18.1 pct in first 10 months this year

Exports were down by 18.1 percent in euros expressed values, in the first ten months of 2009 compared to the same interval a year earlier, informed the National Statistics Institute (INS) in a release remitted on Thursday.

In October 2009, according to INS preliminary estimations, FOB exports totaled 11568.4 million lei (2707.7 million euros) and CIF imports 15429.3 million lei (3612.5 million euros). As against Oct. 2008, exports were down by 5.4 percent in lei expressed values (17.1 percent in euros expressed values) and imports dropped by 24.5 percent in lei expressed values (33.8 percent in euros expressed values).

In Oct. 2009 from Oct. 2008 intra-Community deliveries declined 9.6 percent in euros expressed values and acquisitions from the EU slumped 28.9 percent in euro expressed values. As for the extra-Community trade, exports in euro slumped in the same reference period 35.4 percent, whereas imports slumped 45.2 percent.
Exports in Oct. 2009 rose by 5.2 percent in lei expressed values (4.3 percent in euros expressed values) from Sept. 2009, and imports were down 0.8 percent in lei expressed values (1.7 percent in euros expressed values).

FOB-CIF trade deficit in Oct. 2009 stood at 3860.9 million lei (904.8 million euros), lower by 4346.0 million lei (1284.6 million euros) than in Oct. 2008.
FOB exports over the period Jan. 1 – Oct. 31, 2009 stood at 101242.5 million lei (23905.0 million euros), and CIF imports stood at 134505.7 million lei (31764.4 million euros). Compared to the period Jan. 1 – Oct. 31, 2008 exports were down by 5 percent in lei expressed values (18.1 percent in euros expressed values), and imports slumped 25.3 percent in lei expressed values (35.7 percent in euros expressed values).

FOB-CIF trade deficit over Jan. 1 – Oct. 31, 2009 stood at 33263.2 million lei (7859.4 million euros), 40298.0 million lei (12309.7 million euros) lower than over the period Jan. 1 – Oct. 31, 2008.
The intra-Community exchange of goods value over the period Jan. 1 – Oct. 31, 2009 stood at 75442.9 million lei (17815.4 million euros) for exports and of 98756.2 million lei (23321.2 million euros) for imports, accounting for 74.5 percent of total exports and 73.4 percent of total imports.

INS stressed that the difference between the dynamics computed based on the lei expressed values and the one computed in euros expressed values was determined by the national currency depreciation over Jan. – Oct. 2009 with values ranging between 13.9 percent – 19.6 percent from the corresponding months in 2008.
Over Jan. 1 – Oct. 31, 2009 important weights in the structure of exports and imports were held by cars and transport equipment (42.3 percent for exports and 33.3 percent for imports) and other manufactured products (34.6 percent for exports and respectively 31.8 percent for imports).
