Basescu: Those who believe the President deal with DNA summons are at least childish

President-elect Traian Basescu on Friday said in connection to the case of Senator Catalin Voicu and the accusations levelled against him that if someone believes the President deals with summoning people to the National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA) is at least childish.

‘I do not remember ever mentioning Mr. Voicu. I simply do not remember. If they believe that the President deals with summoning people to the DNA he is at least childish. They probably have some reflexes from the time they were in power,’ Basescu told a news conference in Brussels. He mentioned having learned about Senator Voicu having been summoned to the DNA at the news conference. He also said that anyone ending up at the DNA believes dictatorship has come.

Basecsu also said that the time has come for certain decency in the relationship between the mass media and the President. He mentioned having read a news summary on Friday with a headline that claims a head of a communications service increased his fortune under his tenure. ‘What can I say about a journalist who provides such headlines? What is my business about I don’t know whose fortune?’ Basescu wondered.

He added that he saw another headline claiming that Basescu wants to entice the Liberals with National Bank of Romania Governor Mugur Isarescu, saying he has not discussed with the governor.
‘Why is it that everything is connected to Base scu? Even those suspected of criminal offences seem to be summoned by Basescu. Some have their fortunes increased under Basescu. Others invent prime ministers because of Basescu. Maybe there should be a minimum level of decency in the relationship between the press and Romania’s President,’ said Basescu.

Senator Catalin Voicu of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), a deputy chair of the Senate’s Committee on Defence, on Friday was heard by DNA prosecutors. Judiciary sources say Voicu was brought to the DNA headquarters to testify in a file under which he is accused of corruption.
