The food networks, which cover a total sale surfaces exceeding 1 million square metres and almost 500 locations nationwide, posted some 600 euros in sales per sq m in the peak season, according to the abovesaid daily. Products such as the pork, the fruits and sweets generate the highest product turnover in such stores in this time of the year.
Thus, retailers won’t bet on growth in sales in December 2009 compared with last year. Still, they say they will maintain the customer flow on the level in 2008.
‘We estimate that we will see approx. the same flow of customers in the store as in the same time of the year 2008’, Andreea Mihai, marketing manager with Carrefour Romania, the largest operator of hypermarkets on the domestic market, said.
She also specified that, in general, the number of customers in the Carrefour hypermarkets in December by approx. 50 percent compared with the other months of the year. A hypermarket covering more than 10,000-15,000 sq m in Bucharest may thus see a customer flow of 150,000 people in the week before Christmas.
