According to a release of the Ministry of National Defense, in the first stage of the visit the delegation met the soldiers of the 280th Maneuver Battalion, headed by Lt. Colonel Iuri Tanase, the garrison counseling and liaison team, headed by Lt. Colonel Viorel Ortanu and the battalion counseling and liaison team, headed by Lt. Colonel Dorin Toma, from the military base in Qalat.
Lieutenant General Stefan Oprea thanked the soldiers for the exemplary manner in which they accomplished their missions together with their U.S. partners, wished them luck and easier missions and also the traditional ‘Happy New Year!’ The three commanders received the General Staff’s Plaque for their missions accomplished and for the manner in which they intended to organise these missions. During the visit, the delegation was able to see how the soldiers lived in the military base in Qalat and also how they worked.
The second stage of the mission included also a meeting with members of the National Support Element (NSE) and with liaison officers deployed in the military base in Kandahar. There were approached the same aspects, with the head of the liaison team Colonel Ioan Burghelea, the NSE commander, Lt. Colonel Alexandru Alexandroaia and the U.N. military counselor Marius Popenta received the General Staff’s Plaque. In the end of the meeting, the delegation visited the spaces in which the Romanian soldiers deployed in Kandahar were carrying out their activities.
On the occasion of the same visit, Lieutenant General Stefan Oprea met the commander of the Regional Command South Major General Nick Carter. During the official talks there were approached such issues related to the accomplishment of the missions, the modality to implement the ISAF directive to carry out the missions jointly, the evolution of the threats, progresses, perspectives and the contribution brought by the maneuver battalion and the counseling and liaison teams.
