The Romanian Embassy in Athens monitored the case of the M/V Filitsa Greek cargo ship that was seized by Somali pirates and which had a Romanian sailor aboard and permanently informed his family, keeping a total secrecy upon the case, because any type of publicity could have endangered the negotiations and the life of the abducted, the Foreign Affairs Ministry told on Tuesday.

“The Foreign Affairs Ministry initiated the procedures specific to such situations immediately after it was notified by the Greek company owning the ship about the seizure of the M/V Filitsa Greek cargo by the Somali pirates, on November 16, 2009. The shipping company confirmed, at that date, the presence of a Romanian citizen among the 22 crew members. According to the procedures in force, the negotiations were conducted directly between the ship owners and the abductors” says a release signed by the ministry’s spokesperson Lucian Rosenfeld.

“Likewise, the Romanian Embassy in Athens has been constantly in touch with the crisis unit established within the ship owning company that handled the negotiations, as well as with the Greek authorities. We remind that the procedure to be followed in such cases is total secrecy, the publicity in such cases is bad for the negotiations, risking to affect the safety of the abducted citizens”, the ministry’s release also says.
