Social Democrats’ National Council begins meeting

The National Council of the Social Democrat Party (PSD, in the opposition) gathered on Thursday at the Parliament Palace to decide the convening of the Extraordinary Congress and to debate the proposals for the party’s statute amendment.

Roughly 700 Social Democrats participate in the gathering, where a report on last year’s presidential elections result will be presented. At the same time, the PSD leading body will analyze the project for the main amendments to the party’s statute, filed in to a special commission coordinated by the PSD secretary general and that are to be voted on in the Congress.

During the session, theses for the PSD ideological structure will be presented, followed by discussions on possible reference points for a new Constitution review and for the improvement of the voting system.
The most expected moment of the meeting is a possible announcement by the National Council President Adrian Nastase regarding his candidacy to Social Democrat leader.

So far, the ones that have announced they will run for the party top position are incumbent leader Mircea Geoana, Senator Miron Mitrea, PSD Vice president Cristian Diaconescu and senatorial adviser Andrei Alexandru.
