Victor Ponta

MP Victor Ponta, newly elected chief of the opposition Social Democratic Party (PSD), was born on September 20, 1972 in Bucharest. He is a 1991 graduate of the Ioan Neculce High School of Bucharest and a 1995 graduate of the School of Law, the Bucharest University.

He attended master classes in international criminal law of the University of Catania, Sicily, Italia. He holds a PhD in international criminal law of the University of Bucharest and is also a 2002 graduate of Romania’s National Defence College.
In 1995-1998 he was a prosecutor with the Bucharest District 1 Courthouse; 1998-2001 he was a prosecutor with the Supreme Court, Anti-Corruption Section, Criminal Investigation and Forensic Law Department. In 2000-2001 he was appointed coordinator of the Money Laundering Office.

In 1996, he was an assistant professor at the Public Law Chair of the Romanian-American University of Bucharest and in 2002 he became a lecturer at the Criminal Law Chair of the Romanian-American University of Bucharest.
His first public office was state secretary, head of the Government’s Control Body, which he received in April 2001. Also in April 2001, he was appointed a member on the Supervision and Guidance Board of the Banking Assets Realisation Authority.

Ponta became a member of the National Council of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) on October 12, 2002; a member on the PSD Central Executive Bureau on November 9, 2002 and a PSD vice president on July 9, 2003. He has been representing Gorj County in the Chamber of Deputies since 2004. December 2008 – October 1, 2009, he was a minister for Parliament in the Boc Cabinet. He is married to Romanian MEP Daciana Sarbu, with one child.
