Concrete measures for stimulating economic cooperation between Romania and Azerbaijan

Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Baconschi told a meeting with Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Romania Eldar Hasanov, on Friday, that concrete measures would be taken in order to stimulate the economic cooperation between the two countries.

According to a release issued by the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Romanian chief diplomat pointed to the attention paid by Romania to the Republic of Azerbaijan, a state with which it has relations at strategic partnership level. The Minister referred to the concrete modalities for implementing the decisions made during the latest high-level meeting between the two Presidents (Bucharest, September 28-29, 2009), which are also included in the declaration regarding the establishment of the strategic partnership between the two countries.

Minister Baconschi indicated that Romania and the Republic of Azerbaijan had a huge cooperation potential, insufficiently exploited especially in the economic field, underlining that concrete measures would be taken for stimulating bilateral trade exchanges, mutual investments and direct cooperation between the business circles in Romania and the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The chief diplomat opined that it was necessary to organize the next session of the joint inter-governmental commission on economic and technical-scientific cooperation in the first half of the year.

Likewise, they emphasized the pride of place given by Romania to the cooperation in the energy field with the Republic of Azerbaijan, both countries being equally interested in establishing a solid energy corridor to link the Caspian Basin with Europe, in keeping with the principles of supply sources diversification and creating alternative energy routes. In context, they reiterated the support of the two countries for the Nabucco project and for the PEOP project.

The Foreign Affairs Minister also encouraged the stimulation of the bilateral cooperation in the cultural and educational fields, underlining Romania’s willingness to go on giving an impulse to cultural and student exchanges, the collaboration of universities.
Likewise, the Minister assured that Romania, as a EU member state interested in a stable and prosperous eastern neighbourhood, would support the use of the opportunities offered by the Eastern Partnership and Black Sea Synergy in order to back the Republic of Azerbaijan to get closer to the European Union.
