Romania imports 55 percent less natural gas

In 2009 Romania imported natural gas amounting to 1.614 million tonnes of oil equivalent, by 55 percent (1,971 million tonnes of oil equivalent) less than in 2008, according to data centralized by the National Institute of Statistics.

In the above-mentioned span of time the domestic production of natural gas totalled 8.779 million tonnes of oil equivalent, by 4.9 percent (455,500 tonnes of oil equivalent) less than the one in the previous year. According to some statistics of British Petroleum, Romania’s reserves of natural gas amounted to 630 billion cubic metres in late 2008, accounting for 0.3 percent of the reserves at world level.

Thus Romania is the ninth in Europe and Eurasia. As for Romania’s production of natural gas, British Petroleum signals that it decreased by 0.3 percent in 2008 from the previous year, amounting to 11.5 billion cubic metres, whereas its consumption amounted to 14.5 billion cubic metres, down by 9.8 percent from 2007.
