One Romanian soldier dead, one injured in Afghanistan

One Romanian soldier was injured and another was killed in action on a mission in Afghanistan on Tuesday, the Romanian Defence Ministry reports. Sergeant-Major Badiceanu Florin died and Private Zamfir Marian was injured.

The two soldiers were on a patrolling mission in a column formation of four Humvees in the province of Zabul, on the Kandahar-Kabul motorway. Around 03:00 hrs GMT, the vehicle carrying the two Romanian soldiers stumbled on an improvised explosive device.

Following the explosion, the five members of the crew aboard were rushed by helicopter to the nearest hospital, according to the procedures in force. With all the doctors’ efforts, Sergeant-Major Badiceanu died. The non-commissioned officer, a 2005 graduate, was on his second tour in Afghanistan. He was 31, married with one child.

Private Zamfir is now under medical care, having undergone specialist investigations. Romanian Defence Minister Gabriel Oprea and Chief of Staff Gheorghe Marin have voiced their deepest regret over the loss and their hearts go out to the bereaved family. They are also closely watching the developments in the health state of the injured soldier.
