At least 100,000 public employees should be made redundant for those who remain in the system to collect higher wages, Finance Minister Sebastian Vladescu said on Thursday in a televised show.

Vladescu said that the Letter of Intent to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved by the Government provides that the number of employees in the public system be reduced by 70,000 from 1.36 million at present to 1.29 million in 2011. Asked how many public employees should be dismissed for those who remain in the system to collect decent wages, the FinMin replied: ‘one hundred thousand at least.” Vladescu also stressed „that there are currently no budgeted and unfilled positions.’
