Heavy rains kill two, flood farms, delay trains

Two people have died – a young man and an elderly woman – in the last 24 hours following the strong rainstorms and hailstorms that flooded hundreds of houses and farms, as well as large swathes of farmland, also delaying trains and causing rivers to overflow in northern, northwestern, eastern and northeastern Romania.

A 73-year-old woman from Ocna Mures (north-west of Bucharest) drowned when her house collapsed under the water. Her body was found holding to a cross two hundred meters away from her home. A 23-year-old man was killed when the car he was driving was carried by the swollen waters of the Crisul Repede river (north-west of Bucharest) and he could no longer be rescued.

The flash floods damaged natural gas networks, electric transformer stations and drinking water networks in several communities in the above-mentioned areas. The strong winds tore roofs from the apartment blocks, destroyed vehicles, felled trees, blocked county roads and highways, destroyed bridges and footbridges and contaminated fresh-water wells.
The Danube River waters almost fully submerged three docks of the assembly hall of Damen Shipyard in Galati (eastern Romania); the Danube’s uninhabited lower waterfront was flooded on a 500 metre stretch.
