The General Prosecutor’s Office took over the investigation into the fire that killed several newborn babies at the Giulesti Maternity Hospital in Bucharest.
Initially, the prosecutor office at the Law Court of 6th District Bucharest had opened a file in the case, but through the order by Romania’s General Prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi, the investigation was taken over by the Prosecutor Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice, and it will be coordinated by the head of the Penal Investigation Department Marius Iacob.
According to the release issued by the General Prosecutor’s Office, the team of prosecutors and the authorities investigating the case ordered measures to isolate the afflicted area, to rescue the victims and inquires and tests are in progress to collect all the evidences required to find the causes of the fire. An explosion followed by a fire happened at the intensive care ward for newborn babies of the Giulesti Maternity, in Bucharest, on Monday at about 6:40 p.m.
Bucharest deputy mayor Victor Iovici said that the causes of the fire that had been burning almost 30 sq.m when the firefighters arrived, remain unknown.
All the patients, newborn babies and mothers were urgently evacuated and carried to other hospitals in Bucharest.
