Romanian military killed in mission, in Afghanistan
Corporal Catalin-Ionel Marinescu, of the 26th Neagoe Basarab Infantry Battalion, was killed on duty, on Tuesday, in the Afghan province of Zabul, announced the Ministry of National Defense in a release .
During a patrol mission on A1 highway, the soldier executed a land-reconnoitering mission, according to the procedures.
Following an improvised explosive device attack, the corporal was seriously wounded, being urgently transported by a MEDEVAC equipped helicopter to the Lagman Base Military Hospital for medical care. Despite efforts by medical staff for saving his life, Corporal Marinescu lost his life.
He was 28 years old, not married.
Defence Minister Gabriel Oprea signed a decree posthumously, promoting Corporal Catalin-Ionel Marinescu to 2nd Lieutenant, as a soldier who gave his life under the national flag, proving an exceptional devotion during the mission in the theater of operations in Afghanistan.
As well, the Minister of National Defense submitted to Romania’s President Traian Basescu a recommendation for posthumous decoration of Catalin-Ionel Marinescu with Romania’s Star in rank of Cavalier for the Military and war insignia.
