International Theatre Festival in Sibiu transforms this city into an outdoor stage
For ten days, the streets and markets of the city of Sibiu will be transformed into a real theatre stage, on the occasion of the 18th edition of the most important cultural event in the city – the International Theatre Festival, organized between May 27 and June 5.
This year’s edition of the International Theatre Festival will bring to Sibiu over 90 street performances, with an estimated daily participation of over 40,000 spectators.
Already a tradition, the season of outdoor performances plans to bring the public closer to the performing arts, encouraging the community to participate in these cultural events.
Parades, installations, dancers, pyrotechnics, musicians, acrobats and giant characters from all the corners of the world will invade the city into an impressive performance for which over 300 projectors and intelligent lights were installed, the same as a crane of 60 tons, sound systems of up to 80,000 watts and over 15 tons of other equipment and technical installations.
This year’s festival will be opened with a grand spectacle of light, acrobatics, fireworks, music and installations, presented by the German company Aktionstheater Pan.Optikum.
„TRANSITion” is a show that puts into discussion the idea of society, and rules on which a community is based, a production scheduled on May 27.
One of the best rated street theatre companies in the world – MALABAR – is returning this year to Sibiu with two new shows, that will take place on May 29.
A point of maximum interest is the performance „Muare” of Voala Project company, an Argentina – Spain co-production, a roadshow presented at a height of 40 meters, outdoor, with live music and 13 artists suspended by a crane who will perform a series of aerial dances.
For the first time this year, the festival will also host events at Sibiu Zoo garden, with the show „Giraffes” of Pavane Teatro from The Netherlands, scheduled on June 5.

The International Theatre Festival of Sibiu is organized by Sibiu „Radu Stanca” National Theater, Sibiu City Hall and the City Council of Sibiu, with support from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the Ministry of Regional Development and Tourism, the Romanian Cultural Institute, ” Lucian Blaga” University, Sibiu County Council and UNITER.
